Oct. 6, 1998: Matthew Shepherd, a 21-year-old gay man and a student at the University of Wyoming, is brutally beaten by two of his peers and left to die by the side of a highway. Though the incident finally starts a national discussion on the horrific hate crimes committed against members of the gay community, it also brings to light the latent and often pervasive culture of homophobia spread across middle America.

"C'mere, this is how it happened," began Joe Kelly, bartender at Smokey Joe's since 1962. He leaned down close to the bar, about to recall one of the establishment's many legendary tales.
This one involved former President Harry S. Truman, Smoke's and a bottle of Jack Daniel's.

It's mid-November-everyone is tired of being on campus and seeing the same things every day, exhausted from class work, and disgusted by both the cafeteria and by Cosi.

When I was in elementary school, I remember creating works of art with the program KidPix. In retrospect, the functions were abysmal, the computers were about as powerful as an electrified abacus and the dot matrix printouts were spotty at best (admittedly, the horrific pun there was entirely intended).

Guest speakers, a bone marrow donor drive and a special service helped members of Hillel/Jewish Student Union (JSU) remember the horrors of the Holocaust during Holocaust Remembrance Week, commemorated at the College from Nov. 10-14.
The week, which occurs annually, coincides with the anniversary of Kristallnacht, or the "Night of Broken Glass," during which synagogues, Jewish businesses and homes in Germany were destroyed by fire and looting vandals.

The economic crisis could add heavy weight to college students and their future plans. That is why there is no better time than now to contemplate a post-graduate education.
This is a decision that should be carefully weighted by the students before they embark on the journey of prolonged education.

On the surface, Happy Hour is For Amateurs is a story of drugs, debauchery, and promiscuity. If that is not your style, however, do not be afraid.
This book is much more than that. It is a story that brings out the truth about "the world's worst profession": law.

Dan Ingala was tired. Dan Ingala was sweating. But most of all, Dan Ingala was genuinely surprised that the rather large crowd at The Bitter End in New York demanded one more song after he had wrapped up an impressive set.

There are new reasons for Rutgers-Newark students to walk in fear at night and, surprisingly, it is not in the shape of a molester. Light rail riders on Saturday night were horrified by an incident they all claim to be "supernatural." The story almost seems to be taken straight out of a horror movie.

It is now becoming that time of year again when digging out one's old winter clothing is becoming a necessity. While digging through my closet I found a lot of clothes, all from years past, and was dismayed at some of the styles that I had chosen.
It is possible that the hardest part for many people is the question of what to wear on our feet during these grueling winter months.

In the spirit of tolerance that we are encouraging at St. Joe's lately, I've decided that it's time for me to make a confession: I have a deep-seated prejudice against the exclamation mark.
I can't help but distrust a band that called itself Panic! at the Disco or cringe when I hear the musical "Oklahoma!" Even bespectacled Alex Trebek palls a bit in the shadow of my hesitance to fully accept a show like "Jeopardy!"
Exclamation marks seem unnecessarily flashy and have been overused in text and instant messages to convey that the sender is shouting or over-enthusiastic.

Stevens has always had problems with students finding parking on campus. With recent increases in off-campus housing, these valuable parking spots are becoming scarcer, leading many students to circle parking lots or worse, park illegally. Attempts at reducing the number of students bringing cars to campus have been made; a shuttle service is in place.
